BYU football game plan target - Cameron Pettaway, Iowa State Cyclones
BYU football plays Iowa State this season. Brandon Judd of The Deseret News looked at Cyclone running back Cameron Pettaway.
"The massive roster overhaul at Iowa State impacted the running back position, and it leaves the position as one of the bigger question marks for the program. As a redshirt freshman last year, Pettaway showed flashes, including three games with 50 or more rushing yards, as well as a 72-yard effort in a loss to Cincinnati.
"Pettaway is one of several transfers, along with returner Aiden Flora, who could take over as lead back for the Cyclones. Pettaway will also bring his special teams skills to Ames — he led the country in kickoff return average a year ago, averaging 33 yards per return. With Oregon State transfer Salahadin Alleh lost to injury this offseason, Tulane transfer Arnold Barnes III could also factor into Iowa State's run plans."

Beyond the running back position itself, Iowa State faces the larger reality of having to dramatically change its roster after Matt Campbell took so many 2025 Cyclones to Penn State for 2026. BYU players will not watch a lot of 2025 Iowa State game film to prepare for the Cyclones this season.
The Cougars will look at film of different players and coaches from different 2025 situations in order to get a handle on the Cyclones (in addition to watching September 2026 ISU game film, of course). Stopping Cameron Pettaway is one piece of a larger puzzle for BYU; it's a very new puzzle compared to what BYU faced from Iowa State last season.
