Warning: Some spoilers ahead for Verity.
Josh Hartnett’s Verity character is first and foremost a dad.
Yes, Jeremy Crawford is husband to popular author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway), but he is also the devoted father of twins, Crew (Brady Wagner) and Harper (Sienna Kulovitz). Throughout the thriller, he is seen showing that his children as his priority — even as Verity’s health takes a tumble and as Lowen (Dakota Johnson) pushes her way into their lives.
It’s Jeremy’s dedication to his children that informed Hartnett’s wardrobe, with the help of costume designer Jacqueline Demeterio.
“[He wears] the necklace that Harper makes him,” Demeterio explains. “Then he has this bracelet on the whole movie that one of the kids made. That was Josh’s idea. He’s like, ‘I love the idea of one of the kids making something for me and I wear it.’ He wanted to have that touch that shows he cares about his kids. That was very important for him, for his character.”
Demeterio says Hartnett was overall very “collaborative” when it came to his wardrobe. For the setting in Vermont during the colder months, Demeterio says she put him in clothes that felt cozy but still elevated since the family has money. She wanted him to look “rugged” but still appear as a family man.

“His knits and stuff were Elder Statesman,” she says. “There were still luxury brands, but the textures and the colors [felt] Vermont. He’s an attractive man, so it’s not like you have to do too much to Josh, but it was also toeing the line of not wanting him to be a sex symbol or too glossy. You wanted him to still be a real person.”
For the scene when Lowen — a budding author who will be taking over for Verity’s next book after she became incapacitated following a horrific car crash — arrives at the Crawfords’ house in Vermont, Hartnett had his own ideas for what Jeremy should wear.

“He was like, ‘Oh, maybe I look like I just came back from a run when she arrives because I’m not expecting her yet. She got there a little early,’” Demeterio explains. “So that’s why we had him in the running shorts. And then he’s like, ‘Maybe I just threw the sweater over it before she gets there.’ So he kind of wanted to look very unexpected when she arrived.”

Verity, which landed in theaters on Oct. 2, is based on the Colleen Hoover book of the same name. The Amazon MGM Studios movie is directed by Michael Showalter from a screenplay by Nick Antosca. Per a synopsis, the film follows a struggling writer (Johnson) who gets the “job offer of a lifetime” when Verity’s husband, Jeremy, hires her to complete the remaining books in his wife’s successful series after a “mysterious accident” has left Verity unable to finish.
However, upon arriving at the Crawford home, Lowen uncovers a secret manuscript that reveals unsettling details about the family’s past, leading her to question whether Verity’s writings are fiction or a chilling confession from a deranged mind.
