HBO’s Lanterns finale left fans divided over one key creative decision. Viewers are sharing their frustrations about John Stewart‘s missing Green Lantern suit and the show’s flight sequences.

Lanterns fans aren’t happy with John Stewart not getting a suit

HBO’s Lanterns Season 1 finale sparked backlash from DC fans on social media. Viewers expressed frustration over John Stewart not wearing his Green Lantern suit. Showrunner Chris Mundy told The Ringer-Verse podcast the team scrapped the costume to protect the finale’s emotional beat.

“Where our story ended, that just felt like the most poetic,” Mundy said. The production had already developed costume designs for Stewart. However, creators Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King felt the suit would distract from the story.

One fan on X (formerly Twitter) called the decision “underwhelming.” They wrote, “You’d think the build up to him finally catching flight with the ring would have him IN THE SUIT.” Another viewer posted, “I really wish we got to see his suit.” A third simply asked, “He didn’t even get to wear the suit wtf?” One frustrated fan wrote, “NO GREEN AND NO SUIT. PLUS NO OATH. A NEW OATH.”

Another viewer argued the finale needed a proper suit-up moment. They said it should have ended “with John Stewart’s ring lighting up, eyes glowing green, and the suit forming around him in the dark.” A fan edit showing Stewart in his Green Lantern suit also went viral. One viewer called it a “missed opportunity” and said that was “exactly how I thought this scene was going to play out.”

Fans are hating Lanterns’ low-quality flight scene

The criticism extended beyond the missing costume to the flight sequences. Fans took aim at the visible wire work during Stewart’s first flight. One viewer joked the show “might as well have just left the wires visible.” Another called it “one of the worst flying scenes I’ve ever seen” and noted visible wobbling. One fan simply called it “the s—-y wire work.”

Several fans unfavorably compared the scene to older CW superhero shows. One viewer asked why a CW Supergirl flight from 2015 looked better than Lanterns. Another wrote, “I would like to issue a public apology to the CW.” One fan called the flight execution “way too low-effort for a moment that deserved so much more.” Another pointed out that even Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner flying “was pretty bad too.”

All eight episodes of Lanterns Season 1 are now streaming on HBO Max.
