Meghan Markle may be celebrating her 45th birthday, but a throwback photo is calling back her younger years.
As she turned 45 on Tuesday, Aug. 4, her lifestyle brand, As ever, marked the big day by dedicating a tribute to their founder. The new Instagram post included two photos of the Duchess of Sussex: a recent snap as well as a throwback image showing Meghan as a young girl, sporting her hair in pigtails and a striped skirt as she smiles for the camera.
The previously seen image shows Meghan in her Los Angeles bedroom around 1987, according to Vanity Fair. Meghan appears to be sitting on a bed with a school photo displayed on the wall behind her, featuring both a solo portrait and a group photo with her classmates.
As ever captioned the post, “Happy birthday to our founder, @meghan.”
They continued, “Lighting No. 084 to celebrate!” referring to the brand’s candle numbered in honor of her birth date.
Meghan also shared a post on social media in celebration of her milestone. The series of two black-and-white photos showed the Duchess of Sussex leaping into a pool while clutching balloons. While the first image showed Meghan in mid-air, she disappeared under the water in the second snap, with just her arm visible above the splash.
“Thank you for the birthday love! 🎈,” the Duchess of Sussex captioned the Instagram post.
A close source tells PEOPLE that the new pictures were taken by a friend during an early birthday celebration in California.
Meghan traditionally celebrates her birthdays privately with her husband, Prince Harry, and their two children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5. However, she did share a glimpse into her 44th birthday celebrations last year, which included a meal at Beverly Hills eatery Funke.

“Blowing out the candles on a beautiful 24 hours, and thanking my husband, friends and family for making it so special,” Meghan captioned a pic of her and her elaborate cake garnished with yellow hibiscus flowers.
“To those of you I don’t know, but who send love every day - thank you so much. Please know I feel it and appreciate it ❤️,” she continued. “And just to get a little foodie on you….this dinner last night at @funke_la with the culinary mastery of @evanfunke and his team is in the top five meals of my life. Extraordinary 🍝 Thank you for a standout dining experience.”
After spending time in Portugal and the U.K. last month, Meghan has been promoting the documentary Cookie Queensahead of its theatrical release on Aug. 7. Last week, she attended a screening in Los Angeles before joining a California Girl Scout camp to show the film to them.
Meghan, who executive produced the film alongside Prince Harry, tells PEOPLE that they knew they wanted to support director Alysa Nahmias’ movie as soon as they saw a teaser.
“When we first saw the teaser several years ago, it was just a few minutes in length and still being put together, but it was very clear that Alysa’s vision as a director was capturing something special,” Meghan tells PEOPLE. “The music, the cinematography, the honesty. It made both of us laugh out loud and also feel such emotion as parents. We knew we wanted to help uplift this project in any way we could.”

Asked whether the film about the Girl Scouts’ cookie-selling season resonated differently because she’s raising a daughter, Meghan said, “100 percent.”
The project also stirred memories of her own Girl Scout experience, including an unexpected connection she made with another mom at Lilibet’s preschool.
“Funny enough, on Lili’s first day of pre-K, one of the moms came up to me at drop-off, and I realized we were in our troop together!” she says. “It was so sweet and nostalgic.”
