How does Robyn feel about āDancing on My Ownā today?
In a new interview with The Cut, the Swedish pop star, 46, reflected on making the 2010 song and how her feelings about the track have shifted since itās become her signature hit.
Robyn first brought up āDancing on My Ownā in the interview when speaking about how ābeing on stage is one of the most important routines of my life.ā
āEven though you repeat it, you have to risk yourself in order for the audience to feel connected to whatās happening,ā she said. āItās a ceremony. Itās the total loss of control and also the possibility to create this fire-starter energy that I truly enjoy.ā
The āDopamineā artist continued, āReleasing a song like āDancing on My Own,ā for example, I donāt really feel like itās my song anymore. I feel like itās my fansā song.ā
āOn stage, you transmit without expecting anything in return, but it is what you get in return that creates the kind of feedback loop that a good show needs to have,ā explained Robyn. āI think listening to music on my own is beautiful, but what I like to do with other people is actually sing with other people. Singing together with other people is one of the most healing things human beings can do.ā
āDancing on My Ownā was released in April 2010 as the first single off Robynās Body Talk Pt. 1 mini-album. The song reached No. 1 in her native Sweden, No. 8 in the U.K. and No. 3 on the U.S. Dance Club Songs chart. Itās since been certified platinum in the U.S. for over a million units sold.
The song achieved further success when Britain's Got Talent alum Calum Scott released a cover in 2016.
Elsewhere in the interview, Robyn said āDancing on My Ownā is āsometimesā her favorite to perform live ābecause that song holds me and the audience.ā
She also explained who exactly the song was written about. āWell, it was my ex-boyfriend, and I was very in love with him for many, many years, but we were both in other relationships,ā said Robyn. āActually, there were many men who inspired that song on different occasions during a crazy period of my life.ā

Robyn is gearing up to release her new album Sexistential on Friday, March 27. The project marks her first since becoming a mom to 3-year-old son Tyko.
She spoke to The Cut about how she approaches musicianship and touring differently as a mom. āI could go on about this for an hour, but I think that what changed is that whenever I go to the studio now, I feel like Iām on vacation,ā she said.
āI truly enjoy my own time because I donāt have that much of it,ā added Robyn. āBut I grew up on tour with my parents, so I think touring with kids is definitely possible ā although I will be doing it a little bit differently than my parents did because we were in a Volkswagen bus and I didnāt wear any seat belts.ā
Robyn will embark on The Sexistential Tour in support of her new album later this year.
