A scathing new poll conducted by The Public Religion Research Institute has officially stated that many Americans now see President Donald Trump as a "dangerous dictator."

According to the poll, the numbers of Americans who see the president as a dictator has increased since another poll conducted in March. The PRRI took a poll of 5,469 adults living across all 50 states and found that 59% of its respondents found that the president "is a dangerous dictator whose power should be limited before he destroys American democracy."

Support for the view has reportedly increased since March, when 52% of respondents agreed with the statement. The number also exceeds the 56% recorded in September 2025, when the majority of respondents to the poll agreed that the president was a "dangerous dictator."

According to Newsweek, the poll was conducted over 17 days between May 1 and May 18 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 1.53%. The outlet stated that during the survey, various headlines about the president, his foreign policy, the war with Iran, trade and tariff issues, and rising gas prices permeated the news.

When asked if they would like to comment on the poll, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said that the 2024 presidential election was the "ultimate pole." Ingle told The Mirror U.S., " The ultimate poll was November 5th, 2024, when nearly 80 million Americans overwhelmingly elected President Trump to deliver on his popular and commonsense agenda."

"No other President in history has accomplished more for the American people than President Trump, who is working tirelessly to create jobs, cool inflation, increase housing affordability, and more," he added. "The President has already made historic progress not only in America but around the world, and this is just the beginning as his agenda continues taking effect."

Plummetting polls

The new survey comes as multiple reports have stated that President Donald Trump's approval ratings are historically low. A survey published Wednesday by the Marquette Law School Poll revealed that President Trump's approval rating has plummeted to a record low of 38%.

Despite this, Trump-backed candidates continue to win primaries against other Republican incumbents in states including Indiana, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Texas. A whopping 71% of Republicans said they would back a Trump-endorsed contender, whereas only 20% would favor an incumbent challenged by the president.

The data further highlights a collapse in confidence regarding Trump's economic stewardship, with approval dropping to 30% for the economy overall, 22% for his management of inflation and living costs, and a dismal 19% regarding fuel prices. The report notes that over the past year, public satisfaction with Trump's handling of major issues, ranging from immigration to the economy, has dropped significantly.

This isn't the only poll suggesting Trump is not making good on most of the promises he campaigned on. According to a new poll by Economist/YouGov, 61% of Americans disapprove of Donald Trump's presidential performance, resulting in a net approval rating of –26, which represents the lowest weekly point across both of his terms.
