Novelist-politician Lord Jeffrey Archer died at his home in London, England, on October 5. He was 86. His publisher, HarperCollins, announced the death in a social media statement.

“It is with great sadness that HarperCollins announces that bestselling author Jeffrey Archer, Lord Archer of Weston-super-Mare, died suddenly and peacefully at his home today, aged 86, between writing sessions.”

The statement added that Archer’s new and final novel, Adam and Eve, would be published globally by HarperCollins on October 6.

“The family has asked for privacy at this time, and to share how much he was loved and how proud they are of him,” the statement concluded.

Jeffrey Archer is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lady Mary Archer, a prominent British scientist and their two sons, William and James. Other survivors include his three grandsons and two granddaughters.

William is a theatrical producer and humanitarian, while James is a financier, investment banker, dealer, and businessman.

All you about Jeffrey Archer’s sons

Jeffrey and Dr. Mary Archer welcomed their elder son, William “Will” Archer (named after Jeffrey’s father), in 1972. Will attended Rugby School and Eton College in Windsor, Berkshire, England, before moving to the USA to study art history and Spanish at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Between 1996 and 1997, Jeffrey Archer’s firstborn worked at the European Commissioner’s Human Rights Office. Later, he became the general manager of the Playhouse Theater in Charing Cross, London.

According to The Independent, William is “quieter, introverted, and said to be more like Mary than Jeffrey.” He also worked with Kurdish refugees in Northern Iraq and Mother Teresa’s missionary church in Kolkata, India.

James Archer, born in 1974, is “much more like his father.” He also attended Eton College and became the athletics team captain. Thereafter, he joined Brasenose College in Oxford and later Stanford University in the United States.

James and his four friends founded a young brokers group called Flaming Ferraris. In a July 2001 profile of Jeffrey Archer, The Independent reported:

“The five young traders were behind a PR stunt which ensured they were pictured arriving, Reservoir Dogs style, at an expensive Japanese restaurant, Nobu, in Park Lane in December 1998. The move was designed to raise their profile and increase their already considerable earnings. But the stunt backfired.”

The article continued:

“James Archer now faces a life ban from working in the City for trying, in effect, to rig the Swedish stock exchange. He sold more than £1m of shares in a wood pulp company, Stora Enso, below their market valuation to drive down the main exchange and make money on a series of other deals.”

At the time, Jeffrey Archer’s younger son claimed he planned to sell only a few shares, but his finger allegedly slipped on the computer keyboard, and he sold ten times more. He was banned by the City after a two-year investigation into the share dealing scandal.

Today, James is a credit committee member, shareholder, and director of the London Wall Lending Business. He has two decades of experience in financial and real estate markets. James previously worked as a managing partner at NYA Square’s property fund and as a proprietary trader at Hertford Asset Management and Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB).

James Archer was married to Tara Jasmin Bernerd, the daughter of Elliot Bernerd and Susan E. Lynton.
